How Basel changed the world (2025)
Sound
A soundtrack as a result of a three-month residency at atelier Mondial as a part of the residency programme 2025 by Prohelvetia Cairo. I started the “Fireball” project in 2022, it is an ongoing sonic research focuses on city soundscapes, which illustrate a sound map of capital cities' urban planning vs. nature effect on the psychological, mental health, and behavior of their inhabitants. How the definition of "Noise" changes from one capital city to another, where the cultural fabric is loaded with musical notes and humans are its instruments, where they can reconstruct their future.
The track title is inspired by the book “How Basel Changed the World” by Daniel Hagmann and Matthias Buschle. The book explores how the small Swiss city of Basel has had a profound global impact through its leadership in banking, pharmaceuticals, art, and education. The book highlights Basel’s unique role as a quiet powerhouse shaping international finance, culture, and scientific innovation. Inspired by the book and through the dailey walks and records around Basel and alot of Swiss cities, villages and small towns. I gathered the Swiss soundscapes and noises.
This Track is a mixture of the three-month journey around Switzerland, not only Basel. The field Recordings included city noises, especially construction sites, and nature sounds.
